Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

One of the core values here at Manitou Springs Elementary is our desire to grow the WHOLE CHILD. From nurturing staff and classroom settings, to the Core Knowledge Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science curricula, to hands on learning experiences and field trips, authentic learning continues to strengthen and deepening content for all students each and every day.

Extension and enrichment or teacher collaboration will take place at every grade level. Sometimes this looks like a whole-group lesson I go into the classroom to share. Other times this is a consistent pull-out where I work with a specific group of students to take learning to the next level and apply it to authentic activities. By partnering with teachers, I will continue supporting regular curriculum to help make learning more vivid and meaningful. Together, we will help your child reach new skill levels and build personal interest to hold themselves to more productive standards!

5th Math

WELCOME TO Ms. Kanaga's Advanced Math Class!

We are using a variety of resources for real-world application, including several STEM activities (science, technology, engineering, math).  All content is being assessed with the Common Core Math Standards.   We are pacing and learning content according to the 5th Grade Math In Focus curriculum.  However, we also use:

Student work is being collected for use in a math portfolio to be shared at conferences (or the end of the grading period).  However, assignments that are not being kept in the portfolio will be sent home on MONDAYS so you will know what types of skill activities your child is doing in class.   If you don't see any work coming home, please ask your child to empty out their folder/binder and bring those assignments home to you!  You may also visit this blog page to see the bi-weekly updated overview at the bottom of this page.

Students should spend at least 20 minutes a night working on paper or online math homework.  They will work toward mastering their learning goal(s) in Freckle, other math practice apps or websites AND complete the paper assignment sent home by me with a set time-credit (usually 20 minutes). The students have a full week (7 days) to make sure they have practiced the appropriate amount of time, which will give them flex-days for sports or other activities that make completing nightly homework challenging.

We are keeping track of this practice time for our individual in-class stacked bar graphs showing your child's commitment to practicing math skills.  There are so many reasons for us to support a self-monitoring of independent practice time!!!  Freckle and Khan Academy do have built-in time measures.  However, paper homework and other apps do not.   Setting a goal of number of badges or points to earn is a great idea!  Each week your child will keep track of time on the weekly HOMEWORK LOG, have you sign-off, then turn it in to me for a new one.  If necessary, I will estimate the amount of time spent in order to get a ball-park figure for your child's time spent on homework.  When in doubt, please keep track at home and send (or email) a note with the time spent, the activity completed, and the date.  Since each child maintains a weekly graph to keep track of his or her time spent on math practice, it is important to be accountable in maintaining this log.

*Students who receive a 1 in homework for the week or do not turn in their log will make up the time during a recess.  There is NO homework grade on the report card, but responsibility is communicated in the Success Skills section.

5th Grade Camp is October 3/4, so our homework time this week is reduced to 60 minutes = Meets

       * Practice finding the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) for common denominators
       * Borrow from mixed numbers
       * Apply addition and subtraction of fractions to real world problems

Parent-Teacher Conferences are October 24/25 - homeroom teachers will have student report card and math data, but you may make a separate appointment to meet with me

October 28 - November 8      
       * Practice equivalent fractions, identifying fraction values (benchmarks)
       * Practice fractions as division problems
       * Practice solving word problems with fractions using Bar Modeling: part/part/whole,
          equal parts, and comparison
       * Relationship between Decimals and Fractions

November 11 - November 22
       * Assessment of skills: recognizing equivalent fractions, estimating using benchmarks,
